The History Of Tainan

A Brief Of Tainan History
Dutch Colonization (1624-1662) When the Dutch occupied Tainan , they built Old Fort Zeelandia (Anping Fort) and opened up Provintia street ( Mincyuan Road ), it was the first well-planned street in European style and it became the center of Tainan City . The Dutch also built the Old

Fort Provintia ( Chihkan Tower )
The Ming/Jheng Cheng-gong(Koxinga) period (1662-1683) Jheng Cheng-gong(Koxinga) recovered Old Fort Provintia, and revamps it under the Eastern Imperial Court Tien-fu Administration; recovered Old Fort Zeelandia, and changed its name to Anping. Koxinga's firstborn son, Jheng Jing, succeeded after his death and appointed Chen Yunghwa as the advisor. Under his keen leadership and development, the first Confucius Temple in Taiwan was built, schools were launched, and a cultural pioneering movement was set in motion. He was also at the forefront of irrigation and agriculture administration, and took to an aboriginal assimilation policy, with a host of constructive administrative policies that helped direct Taiwan on course to becoming a sanctum for the Han people.

Cing Occupation (1683-1895) After defeating the troops of the Jhengs, the Cing Government changed Chengtian Prefecture into Taiwan Prefecture , built Sihcao and Anping Minor Artillery Forts in Tainan . British merchants established the Old Tait & Co. and Boyd & Co. Merchant Houses. Eternal Golden Castle was completed. Chihkan Tower was constructed in Cing style. Taiwan Prefecture was changed into Tainan Prefecture . When massive amounts of sand and clay washed into the Taijiang during typhoon seasons, the once beautiful views with glistening light reflected by the waves of Taijiang brook became alluvial soil. Numerous restoration works had been attempted but were in vain.

Japanese Colonization (1895-1945) Japanese troops conquered Tainan . After the Railway Station was completed, the foreign merchant houses withdrew from Anping. Construction of the district court was started. Tainan City Hall was established. Tainan was promoted into Tainan City . The new Tainan canal opened up. The reconstruction of Tainan Railway Station was completed. In addition to ideological control, the Japanese had made a lot of effort to change Tainan City . The ancient capital of Tainan finally had the making of a modern city.

1945 until now Tainan became a provincial city. It was divided into seven districts; they changed Japanese “ding” to “street”. The renovation of the Confucius Temple started, and the Confucius Temple Cultural Park Planning was under way. The essence of the culture accumulated during the last three hundred years and it has made Tainan an irreplaceable cultural capital. Taking its historical and cultural advantages, Tainan is on its way to regaining its historical prominence and glory.

Chronicles of Fucheng

As the origin of history , Tainan City is the oldest city in Taiwan. In 1661 when Jheng Chenggong (a.k.a. Koxinga) recovered Taiwan from the hands of the Dutch, he began his reign in Taiwan from Tainan City . His troops and followers cultivated wasteland s and made great efforts to transform Taiwan into a strong state. Immigrants from the mainland came in swarms, merchant ships gathered here, and all sorts of shops in the city mushroomed . Tainan finally became the urban center of Taiwan . It was a pity that Jheng Chenggong died at an early age. After his son Jheng Jing came into power , Jing built the Confucius Temple and founded schools to continue his father's efforts in building Taiwan into a strong state.

When the Cing Government defeated the Jhengs in 1684, they established the Taiwan Prefecture in Tainan. It was the capital city of Taiwan then. When the Cing Government promoted Taiwan from a prefecture into a province in 1885, they also changed the name from Taiwan Prefecture into the Tainan Prefecture , and the name of Tainan has been used to represent the place since then. Up until the end of the 19th century, Tainan was still the political, economic and cultural center of Taiwan . Therefore, with such rich background, we can see many historical monuments in Tainan City . It also explains why the city is known as the ancient cultural capital of Taiwan.

During the Japanese Colonization, the Japanese planted Royal Poinciana (commonly known as flame trees) on both sides of Jhong s han Road (former Da j heng Ding) and Fu c ian Road. These green boulevard s would turn in to a sea of flames in July when the flowers of the flame trees are in full bloom, thus creating a southern exoticism.

The flame tree , also know as the phoenix tree in Taiwan, is the most common among street tree species in the city; therefore, Tainan is also known as the Phoenix City . When summer draw near and the flame-red flowers bloom on the trees along street sides , such flamboyance makes the whole city appear on the way to shake off its shackles, as if a wild fire blazing towards the blue sky . The passionate exuberance of the flame trees is the perfect reflection of typical Tainan people, under whose reserved and courteous exteriors run their candid and zealous nature.

Fucheng Pass and Present

Uncompromised with the present status and attracted to the beauty of Formosa, earlier settlers traveled across the sea in search of the dreamed land some four hundred years ago. After fighting against the angry sea and overcoming countless odds, they finally stepped on the soil of Formosa in Tainan. These people who realized the dream of Formosa called the place Fucheng.
There are many well-preserved monuments in the city containing full records of early settlers and rulers of the city. When trees towered over these monuments and tourist attractions over time, these places became the recreational areas of the locals.

Demography and geography of Fucheng

Demography and geography of Fucheng

Tainan City is located in the southwest of Taiwan on the rich and fertile Jianan Plain, with a population of about 740,000 people. Rente and Yongkang townships of Tainan County are to its east. Taiwan Strait and Penghu across the strait are to its west. Cieding and Hunei townships of Kaohsiung County are in the south across the Erhcheng River. Cigu Township of Tainan County across the Jhengwen River is to its north.

After the restoration of Taiwan, the city became a provincial city. In the following year, the city was reallocated into the following seven administrative districts: East, West, South, North, Central, Anping and Annan. In 2004 the Central and West districts were combined into the Midwest District.

We have a straight coastline in the west next to the Taiwan Strait. Landscapes along this nearly 20km long coastline are manifold. The northern coastline of the city is located in the Sihcao wetlands in the northwest of Yanshwei River. As the area is covered with a rare mangrove forest, it has become the paradise of birds. Statistics indicated that over one million birds live in Sihcao every year, including over 20 endangered species of migratory birds from other parts of Asia and Australia and over half of the 400 species or so of native wild birds.

The Anping Port in the south of Yanshwei River has developed into the Anping International Port and deep-sea fishing port. Yet, the expansion of Anping Port to the canal in the city has been prevented by pollution problems. In order to enforce urban reengineering and to restore the clarity of rivers, sewerage has been built and the canal realignment has begun.

The Tainan Canal was built 70 years ago. It is not only an important water transportation channel but also a beautiful memory of the past for most locals. Therefore, the realignment of the canal will cover environmental protection, economics and culture. In addition to restoring its transportation function, we will plan various cultural activities along the canal in order to develop the unique cultural image of the canal, so that it can become a cultural and recreational spot for locals and recall the beautiful memory to local citizens.

The fabulous Golden Coast is located to the south of the city. It has a flat and extensive beach of about 2 to 3km long. The blue sky, clear water and golden beach have attracted many people playing and listening to the waves there. As the beach is extensive, we are planning a compound recreational center that combines swimming, bird watching, fishing, camping and accommodation functions in the area. Besides the historical and cultural resources in the urban area, the outdoor and recreational resources of the Golden Coast can provide another option to tourists. Therefore, Tainan City will be a complete tourist city containing both indoor and outdoor resources.

Education

Fucheng has been the education center of Taiwan for a long time and many schools have been founded in the city. Yet, we should not be self-satisfied with our past achievements in literature and culture. When are area seeking urban development, we need to broaden our horizon by integrated knowledge in different areas in order to seek sustainable development with our past achievements. We will make National Cheng Kung University as the core educational center of the city and integrate the academic and technological resources nearby in order to develop Tainan City into the academic center of southern Taiwan, to introduce high-tech industry to the city, to adjust local economic structure, and ultimately to create the powerful competitive strength of the city.Cultivation of talents needs good teachers, and good teachers requires good teacher training. That is the mission and commitment of the National Tainan Educational College.

National Cheng Kung University http://www.ncku.edu.tw/ ADD:1, University Road. Tainan, Taiwan. ROC. TEL:(06)275-7575The NCKU founded in 1931 is the most important university in the city. This science and engineering-oriented university has cultivated countless excellent scholars and talents. Like the National Taiwan University in northern Taiwan, NCKU is the best school in southern Taiwan.Currently, NCKU has been expanded into the biggest comprehensive university in southern Taiwan, and it is the most important support for high-tech development in southern Taiwan.

National Tainan Educational Collagehttp://www.ntntc.edu.tw/ ADD:33 ShuLin Street Section 2, Tainan, Taiwan, ROCTEL:(06)211-3111 ext.600Looking at the education development trends around the world and reviewing the domestic educational environment, it is necessary to seek the sustainable development and growth of the school according to the needs of the country, the characteristics of the school and the resources and conditions available for development. The careful resolution of the staff meeting has decided to upgrade the school into the National Tainan Normal University. In the beginning, we will develop the school into a normal university with existing resources. Then, we will build a second campus to develop into a comprehensive university. Evaluating the educational environment and the status of higher education in Tainan area, Tainan City and Tainan County are located on the extensive Jianan Plain with a population of nearly 2 million people; together with the establishment of the Southern Taiwan SIP and Tainan Technology Industrial Park in recent years, and the development of the Binnan Industrial Park in Tainan County in the future, many technical talents and workers will be attracted to the area. Therefore, it is necessary to upgrade the NTNTC into a university.Based on the above ideas and actual needs, and to maintain the traditional characteristics of the NTNTC, to follow the government’s cultural development policy, and to distinguish from the NCKU in the area, we hope to cultivate talent together with the NCKU in order to demonstrate the highest efficiency of the country’s education resources. The NTNTC will focus on education, humanities, social science and fine arts.

Business and industry

Business and industry

Business
The Tainan City is the center of southern Taiwan where business grows prosperously in the Midwest District. The TNCG spares no pain to promote the business development of the city. We have detailed records of all businesses within the city, including their business items, capital and organization, in order to protect the benefits of both the owners and local citizens. The major merchandize of the city includes textiles, food, metal, plastic and machinery products. Following the social progress and the hard work of citizens, the capital and sales amount of these businesses have been growing steadily, making the city more prosperous.

Industry
For the industrial construction in the city, in addition to promoting state industries, the TNCG offers guidance to private industries to help them develop and expand. On the one hand, we can promote the prosperity of the city; on the other hand, we can increase tax incomes to enrich the budget for city administration and to seek benefits for citizens. In 1960 the TNCG founded the Tainan Industrial Development & Investment Promotion Committee in cooperation with professionals to make perspective planning for industrial policies, industrial management, factory safety and investment environment. The development and prosperity of Anping Industrial Park is a successful example of the committee. Moreover, the future of the Sinci Industrial Park currently under planning is foreseeable.

Fisheries
Most parts of the city contain salty alluvia. These areas are mainly distributed in Annan and South districts. As the soil in these districts contains high salt contents, it is not suitable for agriculture. Therefore, people focus on fishing and have built many fish farms in these districts. We have over 4,000 ha of fish farms in the city, and the fish culture industry is highly developed. Our marine products are famous far and near, and the milkfish from Tainan City is famous nationwide.

Agriculture
We have an agricultural area of about 3899.47ha. Irrigation with waters from the Jianan Dazhun has helped wash away the salt content in the soil. Improvements of soil and farming techniques have allowed us to grow paddies, sugarcanes, vegetables and cereals in the city. Recently, we have reinforced training for local farmers to use new technology and knowledge in farming. We also introduced for the first time the revolutionary tunnel plastic rack technique for growing import muskmelons in order to promote agricultural upgrade and delicate agriculture. The quality of our muskmelons are famous nationwide, and muskmelons have become the major income source of local farmers.
